The Perfect Coat
I’ve a weird obsession with coats and jackets. At this point, I’ll consider it more of an addiction. I just can’t get enough of them. And, I always find a way to justify my new coat purchase. However, if I have to be honest, I can very easily tell you my top 3 favorite coats that I own. I think it’s an item worth splurging on, but you should also know what coat is worth splurging on. Because, not all coats are made the same.
You don’t need to get super expensive/designer pieces to get your perfect coat. There’re so many amazing options out there in all price ranges. But the question is what to look for when you’re trying to find your perfect coat,
- The Fit
- Cuts & Prints
It’s so important to be aware of your body type and know what fit is the most flattering and comfortable for your shape. If it doesn’t fit right or leave just enough room to move around it definitely isn’t your perfect fit. However, if you’re looking for an oversize piece, it shouldn’t look like you’re drowning in it.
Secondly make sure you have option to layer up underneath the coat. Usually coats are designed to cater that, however there’re a lot of times when brands make “true to size” coats, and it doesn’t leave much room to wear chunky knits or jumpers with them. In that case size up.
Quality is key. If a coat is not well made it will show. Make sure the material is something you enjoy wearing. For example, I personally can’t wear scratchy coats. I just don’t like the texture and it makes me uncomfortable. This is a piece you’ll be wearing more than anything in your closet, make sure it’s well made and the quality is great.
Q: How to know if it’s well made or not?
A: Check the seams and the fabric of the lining.
Check the quality of the buttons. Also if they’re stitched perfectly or not.
Wear it and walk around to see the comfort level.
Look into the materials and fabrics used. And, how it feels to the touch.
All of these things will determine, whether the coat it worth purchasing or not.
Cuts & Prints
People often stay in that “classic timeless category” that feels safe. Which is fine ! However if you like modern cuts and prints, it’s better to invest in a piece that’s more authentic to your personal style. You’ll end up wearing it more often and it’ll make you feel more confident. While I do have to plain timeless coats, this one is a favorite of mine because of the houndstooth print and black and white colour combination, along with the classic cut.
If you like plaid, animal print, bold colours, bold patterns, just go for them.
I don’t know about you but when I get a coat, I have to make sure it has decent size pockets. I can’t wear a coat that doesn’t have pockets. It’s a personal preference you can say. But, I definitely think it’s something worth checking.
Like I mentioned before. Yes, it’s a piece worth splurging on.But, “splurging” is different for everyone. You choose how much you can spend on a decent coat. And I kid you not there’s so much, and I mean so much to choose from. You just need to know how to find the perfect fit for you.
I remember few years ago there was this certain camel coat that I wanted so much from River Island. However, it was sold out, and I was so annoyed. Because, I’m super picky with these things which is why I rarely find anything that I absolutely LOVE. This coat was perfection to me. I started to look for similar ones and there were so many options. So just breathe and explore. You don’t need to get it right away. Look around and enjoy the process.
I hope you find these tips helpful.
Good Luck !
